FITCHBURG, Mass. – Freshman forward Lena Kassel (Stuttgart, Germany) was recently selected to the 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Region II First Team as announced by the NFHCA on Tuesday afternoon.

Kassel witnessed a break-out rookie campaign for the Green and Gold, leading the team in points with 67 and goals (31) as well as finishing with five helpers and six game-winning tallies. With her 67 points and 31 goals, Lena rewrote the Fitchburg State record books, setting new program records in both areas as well as setting the Falcons single game record for goals in a game with seven in an 8-0 triumph over UMass Dartmouth on October 22, 2022.

In addition, the first-year Falcon was also selected the 2022 Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Rookie of the Year as well as being named to the 2022 LEC Field Hockey All-Conference First Team.

This year, over 190 Division III student-athletes were named to the NFHCA Division III All-Region Teams, sponsored by The LineUp. Division III teams are separated into six regions: Region I, Region II, Region III, Region IV, Region V and Region VI – each region honors up to 16 student-athletes on the first team and up to 16 student-athletes on a second team.

The Fitchburg State field hockey team concluded its 2022 campaign with an overall record of 10-8 and an 8-4 mark in the LEC, en-route to securing the sixth seed in the 2022 LEC Field Hockey Post-Season Tournament.
