How It Happened

1st half

WPI raced out to an early 10-0 edge on a jumper from junior John Adams (Doulas, Mass.) before Fitchburg State answered with a Javon Taylor (Cambridge, Mass.) bucket to make the score 10-2. The Engineers upped the lead to 34-2 as sophomore Aidan Callahan (Rowley, Mass.) notched a layup though.

The hosts would extend the margin to 41-6 with Callahan knocking down a three ball, but the Green and Gold responded as sophomore Frederick Siayor (Worcester, Mass.) drained a three pointer, while junior Quincy Taylor (Boston, Mass.) added a layup to trim the lead to 41-11 going into the break.

2nd Half

Following the intermission, WPI pushed the lead to 49-11 when junior Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, N.H.) buried a three-pointer before Fitchburg State responded with a J. Taylor bucket and two free-throws by Q. Taylor (49-15).

The host upped the advantage (64-15) as sophomore Tim Reidy (Wellesley, Mass.) connected on a free-throw, but newcomer Jordan Polanco (Methuen, Mass.) drilled a three ball from the left elbow to cut the deficit to 64-18.

With four minutes remaining, Fitchburg State freshman Tyrone Manderson (Saugus, Mass.) netted a pair from the charity stripe before freshman Jack Stowell (Falmouth, Mass.) notched a three-pointer for the Crimson and Grey, resulting in the 90-24 final.

  • Falcons were led by Q. Taylor with eight points, ten boards, two steals and one block
  • Polanco added six points and two rebounds
  • For the Engineers, freshman J.R. Newman (Havertown, Penn.) finished with a game-best 16 points, three caroms and one steal
  • Reidy chipped in with 13 points, one rebound and one steal
  • 19th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood with the Falcons 2-17 all-time when taking on the Engineers
  • Fitchburg State shot 8-for-48 (16.7%) from the field and (2-of-18) 11.1% from three point range

  • Engineers held a 42-37 margin on the glass
