Fitchburg State announces change in football leadership

Tue Oct 11, 2022

Fitchburg, Mass. - Fitchburg State University football coach Scott Sperone has resigned his position. Sperone was hired as head coach of the Falcons football team in 2020.

Mark Sullivan, currently the Falcons' offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season.

In a letter to players announcing his departure, Sperone thanked team members for their persistence and commitment. "I am confident you will be successful in whatever you choose to do in life because you have proven you will not quit, and will fight through the tough times," he said. "The process to become a championship football team takes time, effort and the belief that this program will become a champion. Embrace the grind and understand that if being a college football player were easy, then everyone would do it. Continue to work to become the best student, the best football player and the best person you can be, every day."

Fitchburg State Senior Director for Athletics and Recreation Matthew J. Burke said the department will work to make the transition as smooth as possible for the university's student-athletes. "We are committed to supporting our students on the playing field as well as the classroom," Burke said.

Our campus community thanks Scott for his efforts on behalf of the football team and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors

The Falcons have accrued a record of one win and four losses so far in 2022.

Fitchburg State competes in the NCAA's Division III and is a member of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.
