New London, Conn. – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough 2-0 setback to the Mariners of Mitchell College this afternoon in non-conference action from Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Mitchell broke a 0-0n stalemate with just six seconds remaining in the half when senior Nicholas Ghiradi (East Lyme, Conn.) settled a loose ball in front of the net and buried a shot into the right side of the net for his second marker on the season for the 1-0 edge.

Following the intermission, the Mariners doubled their advantage (2-0) in the 57th minute of action with newcomer Flavio Alvarado (New London, Conn.) receiving a feed from Ghiradi and deposited a shot into the upper left corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the 2022 campaign.

Fitchburg State threatened at the 69:13 mark with newcomer Lucas Barbosa (Lowell, Mass.) putting a shot on frame, but Mitchell goalkeeper Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) turned the shot aside to preserve the 2-0 final for the host.
