Falcons Fall to Curry in Home Opener

Fitchburg, Mass. –The Fitchburg State women's basketball team dropped a 70-63 decision to the Colonels of Curry College on Thursday evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium

How It Happened

1st quarter
Fitchburg State took a 7-3 edge on five points from junior Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) to open the game. Curry responded with a three-point play from Kylie McCarthy to take a 12-11 advantage. After a layup from Kathryn Dunn, the Falcons closed out the frame with three points from the charity stripe to trail 22-17.

2nd quarter
Newcomer Aliza Som (Lowell, Mass.) connected from the three-point line to open the second frame for the Green and Gold. However, Curry countered with a trey from Dunn and Kristyanna Remillard to extend the lead (27-20). The Falcons battled back with a three-ball from junior Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) and a pair from the free throw line from Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) to take a 28-27 lead. Curry closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run capped by a three-point shot from Lauren Dunn.

3rd quarter
Sophomore Caileen Hurley (Whitman, Mass.) knocked down a three following intermission to make it a 37-34 ballgame. A layup from Genness at 6:26 knotted the game at 39-all. The teams would trade baskets as the Falcons forged ahead 47-45 on a trey from Som and held a 52-51 lead at the end of three with a lay-in from rookie Juliana Davis (Templeton, Mass.).

4th quarter
Curry regained the lead (58-54) with a deep ball from Kylie McCarthy at 5:54. Davis followed with a jump shot to keep the game close for the Falcons (58-56). The Colonials put the game out of reach with a 7-0 run to secure the victory.

Falcons were led by Som with a team-best 14 points, seven boards, a steal, and four assists
Harlow chipped in with nine points and 10 caroms as well as five helpers, and 3 steals
For the Colonials, McCarthy finished with a game-leading 22 points, three rebounds, and two steals
Katherine Dunn added a game-high 17 boards and 14 points for the double-double
Fitchburg State shot 23--for-63 (36.5%) from the field and (8-of-25) 32% from downtown
Falcons held a 52-42 edge on the glass
