Dartmouth, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Field Hockey team registered an 8-0 victory over the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth this afternoon in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Cressy Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 10:23 mark as freshman Lena Kassel (Stuttgart, Germany) fired a shot inside the near post for her team-leading 22nd marker on the season.

The Falcons quickly doubled the advantage three minutes later with Kassel collecting a loose ball off a shot from junior Sydney Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) and buried a shot into the back of the cage for her second tally of the contest to make the score 2-0.

The Green and Gold pushed the margin to 3-0 just before the break when Kassel converted a penalty stroke, riffling a shot into the upper left corner to complete the hat trick.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State upped the lead to 4-0 as senior Grace Kerr (Holliston, Mass.) threaded a pass to Kassel, who connected on her fourth tally of the game. The Green and Gold extended the margin in the 37th minute of play with Kassel netting her five score on the day off a feed from Alto for the 5-0 lead.

The Falcons secured the victory at the 43:52 mark when freshman Samantha Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) notched her first collegiate marker, resulting in the 8-0.

This afternoon's contest marked the 24th meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 8-16-0 all-time when taking on the Corsairs

Fitchburg State held a 24-5 advantage in shots, while also finishing with a 10-3 edge in penalty corners

Junior Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.) stopped one shot for the Falcons

Sophomore Hannah Trombley (Foxborough, Mass.) made one save for the Corsairs

Freshman Samantha Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) netted her first collegiate goal

Junior Madison Araujo (Stoughton, Mass.) made one defensive save for the Falcons

With her seven goals, Kassel broke both the program record for goals in a season and goals in game previously held by Casey Bromage

Lena also broke the Falcons single points mark with her 14 points previously held by Amy Kosiewski
