Falcons Notch 10th Win of Season with Victory Over Wolves

 Fitchburg, Mass. –The Fitchburg State field hockey team defeated the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University 4-2 in Little East Conference (LEC) action on Tuesday evening.

How It Happened

Just three minutes into the frame, the Falcons took the early lead. Senior Grace Kerr (Holliston, Mass.) found an open Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) in front of the cage for the 1-0 score. The Falcons doubled the advantage off a penalty corner at the 13:07 mark. At the top of the circle, Kerr left the ball for junior Sydney Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.), who slid a pass to Lena Kassel (Stuttgart, Germany). Kassel wristed her LEC-leading 29th goal of the season past the Wolves' netminder.

WestConn cut the deficit in half just a minute later. Junior Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, NJ) buried a penalty stroke, shooting the ball just inside the right corner to make it a 2-1 game. The Green and Gold regained their 2-goal advantage in the second quarter, as Kassel notched her second of the game at 22:15.

 The Wolves battled back after intermission. Junior Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) collected the rebound off the pads of Falcons' netminder Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.) for her fourth of the season. However, Kassel hit the hattrick as she sliced through the Wolves' defense resulting in the 4-2 final.

  • Fitchburg State held a 30-16 margin in shots, while also finishing with a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.
  • Kassel now leads the LEC in goals (31) and the NCAA DIII in Goals Per Game (1.87), she is second in the nation in Points Per Game (4.07).
  • Jenna Morse earned the victory posting nine saves for the Green and Gold.
  • The Falcons were strong on the defensive side of the ball, junior Sydney Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a pair of defensive saves, while Emma Ganley (Auburn, Mass.) added another stop.
  • Senior Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, NJ) made nine saves in the first half in the setback for the Wolves.
