Sixth Seeded Falcons Upended By Third Seeded Spartans

Castleton, Vt. – The Fitchburg State Field Hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to the third seeded Spartans of Castleton University this afternoon in quarterfinal round action of the 2022 Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Post-Season Tournament from Dave Wolk Stadium.

How It Happened

Castleton opened the scoring at the 9:08 mark of the first quarter when junior Emily Harris (Crondall, England) connected on her 31st marker on the season, firing a shot inside the near post off an assist from freshman Jess Smithson (Beckenham, England) to make the score 1-0.

The Spartans double the lead (2-0) five minutes later with senior Kaitlin Bardellini (Northfield, N.H.) settled a loose rebound in front of the cage and deposited a shot into the back of the cage for her 18th tally on the year.

Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the second quarter as freshman Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) blasted a shot into the left side of the cage for her seventh marker of the 2022 campaign.

Following the intermission, Castleton extended lead in the 51st minute of action when Harris notched her second goal of the contest for the 3-1 edge. The Spartans secured the victory with just over two minutes remaining in the contest with junior Kimberly McCarthy (West Sayville, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the year with an assist from Bardellini, resulting in the 5-1 final.

This afternoon's contest marked the seventh meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 2-5 all-time when taking on the Spartans

Castleton held a 25-15 margin in shots, while Fitchburg State finished with a slim 15-14 edge in penalty corners

Freshman Zoe Martin (Haverhill, Mass.) made six saves for the Spartans
