Kassel named Little East Conference Rookie of the Year

Fitchburg, Mass. – Five Falcons were named to the 2022 Little East Conference All-Conference Teams as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Lena Kassel (Stuttgart, Germany) led all Falcon honorees after being selected LEC Field Hockey Rookie of the year.

In addition, Kassel was also named to the LEC All-Conference First Team along with junior Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.), while seniors Sarah Craig (Ashburnham, Mass.) and Lena Spadafore (Lunenburg, Mass.) earned second team All-Conference accolades. Rounding out Fitchburg State's All-Conference selections was freshman Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.), who was the Falcons representative for the 12th player team.

Kassel rewrote the Fitchburg State record books this season, setting the Falcons single season goals record with 31 as well as the single season points record at 67, while also setting Fitchburg State's single game record for goals in a game with seven.

Jenna Morse earns her first All-Conference nod after anchoring the Falcons defense, totaling 160 saves with a 1.83 goals against average and an .833 save percentage with nine wins in the cage, while Craig also posted her first LEC All-Conference selection, netting 16 points on four goals and eight helpers.

Spadafore collects her first LEC All-Conference honor, registering one assist and one defensive save for the Green and Gold, while being a stalwart for Fitchburg State's defense. Yates would also net her first LEC post-season accolade after witnessing a stellar rookie campaign for the Falcons, concluding the season with 17 points on seven tallies and three assists.

The "Twelfth Player Award" is comprised of one individual per program as selected by each head coach, "presented to a student-athlete in recognition of their positive contributions to the team both on and off the field, who bring forth their best effort in competition, practice and other team activities that positively contribute to the success of the program."

The Fitchburg State field hockey team recently concluded its 2022 campaign with an overall record of 10-8 and an 8-4 mark in conference play, en-route to garnering the sixth seed in the 2022 LEC Field Hockey Post-Season Tournament.
