Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over the Owls of Westfield State this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 10:48 mark of the first quarter when junior Sophia Yates (Woodstock, VT) received a feed from freshman Samantha Jones (Uxbridge, MA) and deposited a shot into the left side of the cage for her fifth marker on the season for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons doubled the lead in the 30th minute of action as junior Olivia Narkevicius (Phillipston, MA) found the back of the cage for her second score of the 2024 campaign to make the score 2-0 going into the break.

Following the intermission, Westfield State cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 31:37 mark with sophomore Meredith Higgins (Enfield, CT) collecting a loose ball rebound off her own shot and putting a shot into the right side of the cage for her fourth tally of the year.

The Green and Gold secured the victory in the 47th minute of action when junior Samantha Yates (Woodstock, VT) converted a penalty stroke for her first tally on the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.
