Baseball Drops a Pair to Owls
FITCHBURG, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped both games against the Owls of Westfield State in MASCAC action this afternoon. Game finished with a score of 10-5, and game two finished 7-4.
THE BASICS:
- Date: 4/27/25
- Score: Westfield 10, Fitchburg 5 GM1. Westfield 7, Fitchburg 4 GM2.
- Records: Westfield (25-9, 12-6 MASCAC), Fitchburg (12-17, 6-11 MASCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One
- The Owls jumped out to an eight-run lead through the first two innings. The first inning had five runs come in on two two-run home runs by Nick Marshall and Justin Neidel. Westfield would add three more in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Chase Racine.
- The Falcons would get one back in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk by Liam Goldstein (Charlestown, RI).
- Westfield would put up another run in the top of the third inning on their third home run of the game. Fitchburg made it a 9-2 game in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout RBI by Adam Koza (Windham, NH).
- The Owls would get their last run of the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Sam Palmer, pushing their lead to 10-2. The bottom half of the inning saw three runs score for the Falcons. Starting it was Maxwell Riordan (Pepperell, MA) with an RBI double to center field. Koza would close out the game with a single up the middle that would plate two, getting the 10-5 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sean McNamara got the win (5-0) after going 4 innings, allowing just 4 hits, 1 earned run, 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts.
- Joseph Stawski (Niantic, CT) suffered the loss (1-3) after going 2 innings, allowing 9 hits, 9 earned runs, and 1 walk.
- Koza was 2-for-3 with a game-best 3 RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two
- Koza continued to deliver for the Falcons at the start of game two. He brought in the game's first run on his 100th career hit, which came as a single to left center. Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA) would then step up and hit a three-run bomb to right field.
- The Falcons took the 4-0 lead into the top of the third. Robinson Baez would break up the shutout with a double to right field. Marshall would then step up and hit his second homer of the game to right field. This time it would be a three-run shot, tying the game up 4-4.
- The game would go into the seventh and final inning tied 4-4. Westfield would break the tie on a walk that was also a wild pitch, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Racine would then bring in another two on a single to right field, getting the final of 7-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jack Novak got the win (4-0) after completing the final 2 innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 1.
- Shane Daly (Rockland, MA) would suffer the loss after going 2.1 innings, with 1 hit, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
- Hurrell was a perfect 3-for-3 with a game-best 3 RBIs.
