Baseball Completes the Three Game Sweep of MCLA
FITCHBURG, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team completed the three-game sweep of MCLA today in conference action with scores of 20-4 and 20-6.
THE BASICS:
- Date: 4/19/25
- Score: Fitchburg 20, MCLA 4 GM1. Fitchburg 20, MCLA 6 GM2
- Records: Fitchburg (11-12, 5-6 MASCAC), MCLA (5-20, 2-11 MASCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One
- The Trailblazers held a 2-1 lead going into the third inning. However, for MCLA, the Falcons' bats would come alive and score 19 unanswered runs through the next four innings. Things started with a Maxwell Riordan (Pepperell, MA) three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. The fourth saw another deep ball by the Falcons, this time it was Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) who hit a three-run shot to right field.
- Abt would add another two RBIs in the following inning (bottom 5th) after hitting a single to right field. Nolan Hills (Danvers, MA) would add another hit to his 3-4 day and two RBIs right after Abt on a single through the right side.
- Fitchburg had their biggest inning in the bottom of the sixth inning, which saw eight runs come across. Abt, Brady Campbell (Sandwich, MA), and Liam Goldstein (Charlestown, RI) brought in runs in the sixth. Goldstein highlighted the inning by bringing in two on a double to left center.
- MCLA would get two runs back to get the 20-4 final in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Michael Wormuth and a sacrifice fly by Rafael Castillo Jr.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Joseph Stawski (Niantic, CT) went 6.1 innings, picking up his first win (1-2) of the season. This outing saw him give up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts.
- Nate Morse suffered the loss after going 4 innings, allowing 11 hits, 7 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts.
- Abt was a team best 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs and a home run.
- Hills was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
- Goldstein was 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two
- Game two started where the Falcons left off, as they put up 12 runs through the first four innings of the game. The first inning had three come across. It was highlighted by a two-run home run by Adam Koza (Windham, NH). MCLA would get one back in the top of the second on a solo home run by Chris Vargas. Riordan would make it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double to left center field.
- The Falcons would build onto their lead in the third inning with a Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA) RBI single and Abt bringing in the team's seventh run on a fielder's choice. The fourth inning had five more come in, making it a 12-1 game. Hurrell highlighted the fourth with a three-run home run to right field.
- MCLA would plate five in the top of the sixth. That inning started off with a Dariel Rodriguez solo home run. Ben Jacob and Wormuth would both bring in a couple more on doubles. Their final run would come in off a wild pitch.
- The Falcons would again go off to score eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Santulli (Wolcott, CT) got it started with an RBI single to left field. Ruairi Rago (Port Jefferson, NY) would bring in another on a single to left field. Koza, Kyle Bergeron (Leominster, MA), Cole DuHaime (Warminster, PA) all brough in a run on singles, getting the final 20-6.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Owen Corcoran (Stafford, VA) got his third win of the season, going 5.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, 6 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts.
- Joshua Bissaillon suffered the loss (0-5) after going 3 innings, allowing 9 hits, 7 earned runs, 3 walks, and 1 strikeout.
- Hurrell was 4-for-6 with 4 RBIs and a home run.
- Koza was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run.

- Fitchburg State baseball will be back Monday when they finish the 9-inning game against Worcester, followed by the doubleheader. Action will start at 11 AM on Riccards Field.
