Softball Sweeps Bears On Senior Day
Pogorek and Moreau guide Green and Gold to first sweep over Bears since 2017
Fitchburg, MA: The Fitchburg State Softball Team collected a sweep over the Bears of Bridgewater State this afternoon on senior day in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Donna Lee Withington Memorial Softball Field as the Falcons took game one by a score of 3-2 in nine innings before securing the sweep with a 4-0 triumph in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One
- Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior Molly Grass (Rockland, MA) singled to right field, advanced to second on a groundout, moved to third on single up the middle from classmate Dana Cisowski (Torrington, CT) and crossed the plate on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Jessica Mueller (Fitchburg, MA).
- The Falcons upped the advantage to 2-0 in the following frame with sophomore Shaelyn Burns (North Attleboro, MA) and senior Allison Pogorek (Millbury,MA) singled to put runners on the corner before Grass drove in Burns with a fielders' choice.
- Bridgewater State knotted the score at 2-2 in the top seventh as junior Riley Fitzgerald (Swansea, MA) crossed the plate on a wild pitch, while sophomore Katie Tobin (Chestnut Hill, MA) reached on a fielding miscue allowing newcomer Kyleah Plumb (Taunton, MA) to score.
- The Green and Gold walked off the contest in the bottom of the ninth when Burns singled to center field before Pogorek ripped an RBI double to right center that drove in pinch runner Maggie Bourgeois (Fitchburg, MA), resulting in the 3-2, game one final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pogorek led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with an RBI
- Grass finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI
- Senior Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, MA) earned the win for Fitchburg State, giving up two runs on seven hits as well as six K's and one walk in the complete game effort
- For the Bears, Fitzgerald hit 2-for-4 with a run scored
- Plumb chipped in with two hits and one run scored
- Senior Madelyn Klingel (Windsor, CT) took the loss for Bridgewater State, yielding three runs on ten hits in addition to four strikeouts over 8.2 innings of work
HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two
- Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first frame with Cisowski singling to left field, advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring on an RBI base hit off the bat of Mueller for the 1-0 edge.
- The Falcons pushed the lead to 3-0 in the following stanza when sophomore Adria McKenzie (Lowell, MA) reached on a fielding miscue and scored on an RBI single up the middle from junior Ella Marshall (Gloucester, MA), while Grass ripped an RBI double off the top of the fence to bring home Marshall.
- The Green and Gold secured the victory in the bottom of the third as Cisowski singled up the middle, moved to second and third on a wild pitch and a groundout, while junior Isabella Sousa (Charlton, MA) laced an RBI single to right center, scoring Cisowski, resulting in the 4-0, game to final.
- This afternoon's was senior day and the Fitchburg State Softball team honored seven seniors for their contributions to the program with the seniors being #2 Dana Cisowski, #3 Lauren Kirkconnell, #8 Allison Pogorek, #9 Mary Kate Moreau, #11 Molly Grass, #12 Julia Gauvin and #15 Sarah Cahill
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- This afternoon's contest marked the 83rd meeting between the two teams on softball field with the Falcons 12-71 all-time when taking on the Bears
- Cisowski paced Fitchburg State, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored
- Grass went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Green and Gold
- Senior Mary Kate Moreau (Berkley, MA) collected the win for Fitchburg State, allowing eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in the complete game effort
- For the Bears, freshman Makayla Ansell (Menifee, CA) finished 3-for-4
- Tobin added two hits for the visitors
- Junior McKayla Cusack (West Haven, CT) suffered the setback for Bridgewater State, giving up four runs (2 earned) on nine hits with two K's and one walk over six innings pitched
