Softball Swept By Lancers In Conference Double Header

Worcester, MA: The Fitchburg State Softball Team dropped a pair of Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contests to the Lancers of Worcester State this afternoon from Rockwood Park as the Falcons were edged 5-4 in the opener before dropping the night cap by the score of 1-0.

Sousa paces Green and Gold with four hits

Worcester, MA: The Fitchburg State Softball Team dropped a pair of Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contests to the Lancers of Worcester State this afternoon from Rockwood Park as the Falcons were edged 5-4 in the opener before dropping the night cap by the score of 1-0.

- Records: Fitchburg State (9-15, 4-4 MASCAC), Worcester State (15-13, 5-3 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  Worcester State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as junior Emma Lampher (Charlton, MA) singled on bunt to advance sophomore Bailey Tammara (Fitchburg, MA) second and third before Tammara scored on the throw, while senior Emily bartlett (Lowell, MA) followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Lampher for the 2-0 margin. Worcester State secured the victory in the bottom of the sixth when Lampher doubled to right field, to bring in sophomore Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) and sophomore Carisa Andrews (Medford, MA), resulting in the 5-1 final.

- Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth as senior Dana Cisowski (Torrington, CT) walked, moved to second and third on base hits from freshman Jessica Mueller (Fitchburg, MA) and junior Isabella Sousa (Charlton, MA) before senior Lauren Kirkconnell (Dayville, CT) walked to bring in Cisowski.

- The Lancers upped the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth with Lampher drawing a walk and scored on a double down the left field line from sophomore Emma Lapoint (Westfield, MA). . Worcester State extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Lampher doubled to right field, to bring in sophomore Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) and sophomore Carisa Andrews (Medford, MA) to make the score 5-1.

- The Green and Gold answered in the top of the seventh with Cisowski singling to left field to score senior Molly Grass (Rockland, MA), while Sousa walked with the bases loaded to plate senior Julia Gauvin (Granby, MA) before sophomore Adria McKenzie (Lowell, MA) followed with an RBI single to short stop, bringing home Cisowski, but the Lancers would hold on for the 5-4, game one victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-  Sousa paced the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with an RBI

-  McKenzie went 2-f0r-4 with an RBI for the Green and Gold

-  Senior Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, MA) suffered the setback, allowing five runs on seven hits with three K's and four walks over sis innings pitched

-  For the Lancers, Lampher finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI

-  Bartlett chipped in with two hits, including a triple and an RBI

-  Bartlett collected the win for Worcester State, giving up four runs on eight hits as well as nine strikeouts and six walks over 6.1 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  Worcester State grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first as Lapoint grounded out to drive in Lampher for the 1-0 advantage. Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the fourth when Cisowski and Sousa collected base hits to lead off the frame, but Lancer hurler Peyton Mahoney (West Boyleston, MA) worked out of the jam as Worcester State held on for the 1-0, game two victory.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  This afternoon's contest marked the 92nd meeting between the two teams on softball field with the Falcons 30-62 all-time when taking on the Lancers

-  Sousa paced the Falcons, hitting 2-for-3

-  Cisowski, Gauvin and senior Allison Pogorek (Millbury, MA) added one hit each for the Green and Gold

-  Sophomore Madison Solt (Salem, NH) took the loss for Fitchburg State, yielding one run on five hits with one strikeout and one walk in six innings of work

-  For the Lancers, Lampher finished 1-for-3 with a run scored+

-  Bartlett chipped in with one hit

-  Mahoney picked up the win for Worcester State, giving up five hits with five K's in the complete game effort

- Fitchburg State returns to action on Wednesday as they host the Wildcats of Bay Path University for a non-conference twin bill, starting at 3:00PM.
