Softball Falls In MASCAC Opening Round

Worcester, MA: The Fitchburg State Softball team dropped a 7-0 decision to the third seeded Lancers of Worcester State this afternoon in first round action of the 2024 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) from Ralph Raymond Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Worcester State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as sophomore Emma Lapoint (Westfield, MA) singled to left field, scoring junior Emma Lampher (Charlton, MA) and sophomore Bailey Tammaro (Fitchburg, MA), while sophomore Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) and sophomore Bella Gasbarro (Leominster, MA added RBI base knocks for the 6-0 advantage.
- Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the fourth when senior Dana Cisowski (Torrington, CT) walked, moved to second on wild pitch and third on a single to left field off the bat of junior Isabella Sousa (Charlton, MA), but Worcester State worked out of the jam, keeping the score at 6-0.
- The Lancers pushed the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth with freshman Cali Brouillar (Millbury, MA) singling up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing miscue and crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from Tammaro.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- This afternoon's contest marked the 93rd meeting between the two teams on softball field with the Falcons 30-63 all-time when taking on the Lancers
- Sousa paced the Falcons, going 1-for-2 with a single and a walk
- Cisowski and junior Ella Marshall (Gloucester, MA) added one walk each for the Green and Gold
- Graduate student Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, MA) suffered the setback for Fitchburg State, allowing five runs (4 earned) on six hits and one K over 2.1 innings pitched
- For the Lancers, junior Abigail Koziol (Lunenburg, MA) finished 3-for-4 with a run scored
- LaPoint chipped in with a triple, one run scored and two RBI
- Senior Emily Bartlett (Lowell, MA) collected the win for Worcester State, yielding one hit with six strikeouts and three walks in the complete game effort
