Baseball Rallies Back to Take Down Delaware Valley
DAVENPORT, FL: The Fitchburg State baseball team rallied back after being down 6-2 to win a nonconference game against Delaware Valley 11-7.
THE BASICS:
- Date: 3/9/25
- Score: Fitchburg 11, Delaware Valley 7
- Records: Fitchburg (2-2), Delaware Valley (1-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Delaware Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings of play. Nate Ludwig highlighted those two innings for the Aggies with two RBI singles. The other runs were scored on walks and catcher's interference. The Falcons would get two back, putting it at 5-2 in the top of the third inning on a Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) single up the middle that brought in one. Adam Koza (Windham, NH) kept the inning going with his first hit, which came on a single through the left side, plating one more.
- The Aggies would plate one in the bottom half of the third, getting the score to 6-2. Fitchburg would cut into the deficit by another two runs in the top of the sixth. It started with a sacrifice fly by Matthew Smith (Flanders, NJ) followed by a Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) single up the middle to plate another, making it a 6-4 game in favor of the opposing team.
- Delaware would score their final run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo blast from Tyler Mellinger. After that home run, the Falcons' offense got hot as they would proceed to score seven runs between the eighth and ninth innings. First, a four-run top of the eighth, highlighted by another Kelly RBI single, and a two RBI double by Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA). Abt would add another RBI on a sac fly to close out the eighth.
- The ninth would see another three Falcon runs, with Abt delivering again, bringing in two runs on a single up the middle. Nolan Hills (Danvers, MA) continued to see the ball well, picking up another two hits and a run batted in to get the final of 11-7.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jovanni Merced (Springfield, MA) delivered an excellent outing for the Falcons in relief, pitching 3.2 innings where he only gave up two hits, one run, and four strikeouts.
- Shane Daly (Rockland, MA) would get the win, however, putting him at 1-0 on the season. Daly delivered a solid 1.2 innings pitched with no hits and four strikeouts.
- Nick Covolus would receive the loss (0-1) after 1.1 innings worth of work, where he surrendered 3 runs on one hit and three walks.
- Abt topped all with four RBIs on a 2-5 day.
