Baseball Cruises Past Lancers
FITCHBURG, MA: Fitchburg State baseball defeated Worcester State this afternoon in a conference matchup.
THE BASICS:

- Records: Fitchburg (7-20, 2-8 MASCAC), Worcester (5-16, 4-5 MASCAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Worcester took the lead in the second inning on a two-run blast to right center field by Michael Cooper. In the third inning, Fitchburg got one back to make it a one-run game on an RBI groundout by Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA). Abt again delivered in the fifth with an RBI single to tie the game up 2-2.
The Falcons gained the lead in the sixth with a two-run inning that started with Cole DuHaime (Warminster, PA) laying down a safety squeeze that plated one. The second run came across on a throwing error by the Lancers' shortstop.
- The seventh inning would be the Falcons biggest as three runs came in to score. DuHaime brought in two on a single through the left side, extending the Fitchburg lead to four at 6-2. Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) would hit it into the same gap between the two infielders on the left side to plate that last in the inning. Fitchburg completed their scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning, getting the score to 9-2 on a two-run home run by Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA) to deep right center.
- Worcester showed a bit of life in the top of the ninth with another two-run blast, this time coming off the bat of Tyler Smith, getting the final of 9-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- DuHaime finished going 1-for-4 with a game-high 3 RBIs.
- Hurrell was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, a home run, and 2 runs scored.
- Jarret Morrill (L, 1-2) surrendered 12 hits, 6 earned runs, and struck out 5.
- Jovanni Merced (Springfield, MA) got his first win of the season in relief. He pitched in 5.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 earned, and striking out 4.
