Hockey Falls to UMass Dartmouth in CodFish Bowl
BOSTON, MA: Fitchburg State ice hockey dropped a non-conference bout with UMass Dartmouth this afternoon, drawing a close to the 2025 CodFish Bowl.
In an engaging contest, the Fitchburg State Falcons (7-4) went head-to-head with the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (5-5) at a neutral site in Boston, with the Corsairs emerging victorious 6-3. Despite a strong start, the Falcons couldn't maintain their momentum against Dartmouth's persistent play.
The match started with high intensity from both sides as the score was knotted at 2-2 by the end of the first period, thanks to goals from Fitchburg State's Jack Johansen (Milford, NH) and Jackson Collins (Wake Forest, NC). Dartmouth's goals came off the sticks of Noah Webster and Brandon Clark.
However, UMass Dartmouth pulled ahead in the second period, turning a tight game into a 5-3 lead with three unanswered goals from Doug Doren, Kevin Johnston via a power-play, and Spencer Sykes. Samuel Rennick (Salisbury, MA) managed to notch the first goal in the second period. It was the last time the Falcons found the back of the net. The Corsairs solidified their lead further by the game's close, with one last goal in the third period by Alex Walker.
The Falcons' Frederick Soderberg (Harris township, MI) and Alexander Falkenhagen (Thornhill, ONT) shared responsibilities between the posts, facing a tough Corsair offensive line. Soderberg turned away 18 shots in the loss (6-3) after facing 24 shots. Falkenhagen saved all four of the shots he faced. Marshall McKallip got the win (2-2) in net for the Corsairs after making an impressive 43 saves on 46 shots.
The Falcons' goals had contributions from Elowan Orme Lynch (Courbevoie, France), Hunter Dunn (Douglas, MA), and Kristopher Zapata (Cherry Hill, NJ), who all recorded assists. The Falcons picked up six minor penalties that went for 12 minutes.
Looking forward, Fitchburg State will face off against Plymouth State on January 11 in Plymouth, NH.
