Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Vikings

SALEM, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team split today's MASCAC doubleheader with the Salem State Vikings, concluding the three-game series 2-1 in favor of Salem. Fitchburg took game one 11-1 but fell in game two 3-2.

SALEM, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team split today's MASCAC doubleheader with the Salem State Vikings, concluding the three-game series 2-1 in favor of Salem. Fitchburg took game one 11-1 but fell in game two 3-2.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/28/25

- Score: Fitchburg 11, Salem 1 GM1. Salem 3, Fitchburg 2 GM2.

- Records: Fitchburg (5-8, 1-2 MASCAC), Salem 5-8, 2-1 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  Game one was all the Falcons as their offense explodes for 16 hits and 11 runs. The Falcons had their biggest inning in the top of the third, scoring six runs. Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) got it started with a two-run single to right field. Matthew Smith (Flanders, NJ) would keep it going with a single of his own that would bring in another run, making it 6-0. Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) would get the Falcons' fourth hit in a row, bringing in one. After a sacrifice fly, Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) would deliver the final run of the inning on a single to left field, putting the game at 9-0 in the Falcons' Favor.

-  Salem would get the one and only run in the bottom half of the third inning. Jake Boucher would bring the run in on a groundout to first base.

- Fitchburg would add on two more in the final inning of the contest. Mat Kelly would get his fourth hit of the ball game and his third RBI on a single to right field. Joseph DiCrosta (Wallingford, CT) would come in to pinch hit and deliver a hit, singling to left field to bring in the 11th and final run for the Flacons.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Shane Daly (Rockland, MA) got the start and went 3 innings, allowing just 4 hits,1 run, and 3 strikeouts. He wasn't eligible for the win as he did not complete four innings.

Owen Corcoran (Stafford, VA) would come into the game in relief and pitch the final four innings to secure the win, putting him at 2-0 on the season. He went 4 innings, allowing 3 hits and no runs, and he struck out 2.

-  Cam Fisher suffered the loss (0-3) for the Vikings. He went 2 innings, allowed 5 runs on 8 hits, and had 1 strikeout.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

-  Both teams were scoreless through three complete innings. The Vikings would strike first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Bourgeois would bring in the first run on a double to left center field. Connor Dolan would follow up with a single to right field to make the game 2-0. The third and final Salem State run would come across two batters later on a bases loaded walk by Nolan Currier.  

- The Falcons would respond with their only two runs of the game in the next half inning. Abt would deliver again for Fitchburg, this time with a two-run single to left field.

- Neither team crossed home plate against the remainder of the seven-inning contest, marking the final 3-2 in favor of the hosting team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Nick Bamforth got the win (1-0) after going 4.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs.

-  Brandon McMahon would get the save. His first of the season after going 2.1 innings, where he gave up just two hits and struck out one.

Joseph Hartnett (N. Attleboro, MA) would be tagged with the loss (0-3). He would pitch 3.1 innings for the Falcons, giving up 3 earned runs, 6 hits, and 3 strikeouts.
