Baseball Swept by Buccaneers

BUZZARDS BAY, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped both MASCAC baseball games against the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime this afternoon by scores of 8-2 and 7-2.

BUZZARDS BAY, MA: The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped both MASCAC baseball games against the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime this afternoon by scores of 8-2 and 7-2.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/6/25

- Score: MMA 8, Fitchburg 2 GM1. MMA 7, Fitchburg 2 GM2.

- Records: MMA (13-10, 4-2 MASCAC), Fitchburg (7-10, 2-4 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game One

-  Game one started with the Falcons taking a 2-0 lead through the first two innings. Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) would bring in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly that scored Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA).

-  The Falcons added their last run in the top of the second on a solo home run by Adam Koza (Windham, NH) to center field.

- The Buccaneers would then go on to score eight unanswered runs, starting in the bottom of the third with a grand slam by Brett Velzis. He would then add on two more RBIs to his stat sheet in the fourth inning with a two-run single to right field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Shane Daly (Rockland, MA) suffered the loss (1-1) for the Falcons, after throwing three innings. During his time on the mound, he surrendered five hits, allowed four earned runs, and struck out five.

-  Hunter Dean went the distance for Mass Maritime, improving to 4-1 on the season. His complete game saw just four hits, one earned run, and nine strikeouts.

-  Hits: MMA 8, Fitchburg 4

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game Two

Game two saw the Buccaneers' offense keep rolling with another six unanswered runs through the first four innings. Evan Vieira was the top producer for Maritime. He brought in two runs on a single through the right side in the second inning. Then, he would bring in another in the fourth on a walk with the bases loaded. At that point, it would be a 5-0 game, with Velzis adding the sixth run to close out the fourth on a sac fly.

- Fitchburg would get their two runs in the top of the sixth on a throwing error by the Bucs third basemen, scoring Maxwell Riordan (Pepperell, MA) and Nolan Hills (Danvers, MA).

- The final run was scored by Maritime in the bottom half of the sixth, on a Michael Logiudice single to right field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Joseph Hartnett (N. Attleboro, MA) suffered his fourth loss of the 2025 campaign after going 1.2 innings, in which he surrendered three earned runs on three hits, three walks, and struck out four.

-  Sam Huffman got the win (4-1) for the Bucs. He went five innings, where no runs scored on four hits, one walk, and one strikeout.

-  Hits: MMA 10, Fitchburg 6

UP NEXT:

Fitchburg State baseball could be back on Wednesday with an unknown opponent. Colby-Sawyer will not be making the trip because it had to reschedule a conference game.
