Women's Basketball Upended By Lancers In Conference Opener
Steph Hart paces Green and Gold with 16 points
Worcester, MA – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team dropped a 72-53 decision to the lancers of Worcester State this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Brissette Court.

How It Happened
1st quarter
Worcester State opened the contest with a 17-2 advantage on a bucket by sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) before Fitchburg State answered with a layup from senior Morgan Genness (Belgrade, MA) and two free-throws from freshman Emma Adisa (Houston, TX) to make the score 19-6. The Falcons cut the deficit to 21-8 as senior Stephanie Hart (Shirley, MA) hit a layup, but the Lancers upped the margin to 26-8 as senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) registered a basket.
2nd quarter
The Green and Gold answered with senior Kathryn Hart (Shirley, MA) netting a layup (28-10), but the hosts pushed to advantage to 34-10 on a jumper by sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA).Fitchburg State responded when senior Rylie Harlow (Hanson, MA) connected on back-to-back three balls to cut the lead to 34-17 before Worcester State took a 38-21 edge into the break on a Hurynowicz layup.
3rd quarter
Following the intermission, Fitchburg State went on an 8-2 run to open the second half as Steph Hart registered five points and Harlow added a three-pointer (40-29) before Worcester State extended the lead to 42-29 on a Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) layup. The Falcons cut the lead to 47-36 on a three-pointer from Genness, but the Lancers upped the margin to 50-36 when Smith notched a layup.
4th quarter
The Falcons reduced the lead to 52-42 as senior Caileen Hurley (Whitman, MA) and Genness registered buckers before the Lancers answered back with Smith netting a jumper (57-42). The Green and Gold responded with a Steph Hart layup, but the hosts secured the victory on a three-ball from senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT), resulting in the 72-53 final.
