Falcons Fall to Spartans in Semester Finale

How It Happened

1st Quarter

Castleton raced out to a 9-0 lead with a trey from Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, NJ) and pair of layups from Liz Bailey (West Rutland, VT) and extended the lead to 12-1 with a triple from Delaney Whitehead (East Longmeadow, Mass.). The Falcons reacted with a baseline jumper from sophomore Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) and a 3-pointer from classmate Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) to end the quarter at 18-6.

2nd Quarter

Trailing 24-6, newcomer Juliana Davis (Templeton, Mass.) sank a pair of free throws for the Falcons. However, the Spartans responded with back-to-back layups from Vuz and Elise Magro. The Green and Gold answered with a layup from Ephemian Bailey (Maple Grove, Minn.) and a beyond-the-arc bucket from rookie Aliza Som (Lowell, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 30-13. Vuz closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer from the corner to give Castleton a 38-16 score at halftime.

3rd Quarter

The Falcons started the third with a pair from the charity stripe from E. Bailey and a steal with a layup from Genness to make it a 38-20 score. Castleton responded with eight unanswered capped by a jumper from Magro inside the key. The hosts knocked down four points from E. Bailey to make it a 55-27 ballgame.

4th Quarter

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons started with a layup from Harlow and three points from Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.). The Spartans closed out the game as Maggie McKearin (Proctor, VT) and Emily Adams (Enosburg Falls, VT) hit three-pointers, resulting in the 78-33 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Bailey paced the Falcons with 9 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Harlow finished with 6 points and 6 boards.
  • For the Spartans, Magro led the way with a game-high 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.  L. Bailey chipped in with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
  • Castleton shot 30-for-64 (46.9%) from the field and (8-of-21) 38.1% from three-point range
  • Fitchburg State finished 11-for-48 (22.9%) overall and (2-for-18) 11.1% for beyond the arc
