Salem, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team fell to the Vikings of Salem State 84-66 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

1st Quarter

The Vikings raced out to a 7-4 lead after Kylie Gates knocked down a three-pointer. The Falcons rebounded with a lay-up from Juliana Davis (Templeton, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 8-6. Salem countered with a 10-2 run including six points from Abuk Teng to forge ahead 18-10 after one frame.

2nd Quarter

Trailing 24-16, sophomore Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) started a 13-7 run for the Falcons with back-to-back buckets. Sophomore Rylie Harlow added a pair of jumpers and a trey from Kathryn Hart (Shirley, Mass.) knotted the score at 31-31. Gates finished the quarter with a jumper to give the Vikings a 39-35 lead at intermission.

3rd Quarter

Salem State extended the lead to ten (44-34) after opening the frame with layups from Gates and Alyssa Genness. The Green and Gold answered with jumpers from Harlow and Stephane Hart. However, Teng kickstarted the Vikings to a 14-0 run and a 64-44 lead.

4th Quarter

Fitchburg State outscored the Vikings in the final quarter. Stephanie Hart made a pair of jumpers to push the score to 79-57, but Salem State closed out the game with a three-pointer from Alyssa Genness.

Inside the Numbers

  • Davis paced the Falcons with a double-double 17 points, and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Hart also finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Harlow added 14 points,
  • For the Vikings, Gates led the way with a career-high 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.
  • Salem State shot 35-for-79 (44.3%) from the field and (4-for-12) 33% from three-point range
  • Fitchburg State finished 29-for-72 (40.3%) overall and (4-for-20) 20% for beyond the arc
  • The Vikings held a 49-42 advantage on the boards
