Lancers Charge Past Falcons

Fitchburg, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team dropped a 66-34 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Wednesday evening at Parkinson Gymnasium

How It Happened

1st Quarter

Worcester State reeled off the first eight points of the game including four points each from Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Nyah Thomas (Attleboro, Mass.). Juliana Davis (Templeton, Mass.) put in a layup for the Green and Gold to cut the deficit to 8-5. Back-to-back three-pointers from senior Madison Gutierrez (Holyoke, Mass.) forged the Lancers' ahead 15-5. Junior Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) knocked down a trey from the baseline for the Falcons but the Lancers' extended the lead (21-8) with a bucket from Thomas. Fitchburg State finished the frame with a three-pointer from Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) and a jumper from Kathryn Hart (Shirley, Mass.).

2nd Quarter

Trailing 25-13, sophomore Caileen Hurley (Whitman, Mass.) hit a bucket and Kathryn Hart had a baseline jumper to make it an eight-point ballgame (25-17). Worcester State responded with a three from Gutierrez and four points from Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) to take a 34-18 lead into intermission.

3rd Quarter

Blomgren connected from beyond-the-arc to open the third quarter for the Lancers to spark a 6-0 run. At the eight-minute mark Genness hit a three-pointer for the Falcons to halt the run.

Worcester State extended the lead (55-29) with a three-point play from freshman Cam Watkins (Dracut, Mass.). Fitchburg State closed out the frame with a 3-pointer from Kathryn Hart and a pair from the charity stripe from senior Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.).

4th Quarter

Juliana Davis had four straight points for the Falcons to start the fourth quarter. Sophomore Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.) added four points and classmate Abby MacDonald drained a three-pointer for Lancers to push the score to 64-33.

Inside the Numbers

  • Kathryn Hart paced the Falcons with 9 points off the bench. Genness chipped in with 8 points, 4 rebounds, a steal and an assist.
  • For the Lancers, Blomgren led the way with a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Worcester State shot 28-for-71 (39.4%) from the field and (6-for-19) 31.6% from three-point range
  • Fitchburg State finished 11-for-53 (20.8%) overall and (4-for-15) 26.7% for beyond the arc
  • The Lancers held a 54-37 advantage on the boards
