Falcons Upended By Colonels In Four Sets
Harewood and Sardella pace Green and Gold
Milton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Volleyball Team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Colonels of Curry College in non-conference action from the William Katz Gymnasium.

How It Happened
First Set
With the score knotted at 4-4, Fitchburg State went on a 5-0
run as freshman Stephanie
Sardella (Billerica, Mass.) netted a pair of
kills, while junior Emily
Gelinas (Westfield, Mass.) added one kill. Curry
battled back to take a 17-15 edge with senior Lauren
Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) collected two kills before the
Falcons rallied to tie the first set at 22-22 on a
Shianne
Harewood (Sterling, Mass.) kill. The Colonels
secured the first set however on a Guzman kill for the 25-22
final.
Second Set
Fitchburg State grabbed a 5-4 edge in the second set on blocks
from freshman Gabrielle
Griffiths (Bedford, Mass.) and Harewood. The
Falcons pushed the lead to 14-9 on another Harewood kill, but
Curry trimmed the deficit to 14-12 as junior Leah
Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) notched a service ace.
Trailing 18-14, the Colonels closed out the second set on an
11-1 run, capped by a Sonja Matheson (Voluntown,
Conn.) kill for the 25-19 final.
Third Set
The Green and Gold opened the third set with a 5-1 run as
Harewood registered a kill and Gelinas notched a service ace,
but the Colonels answered with a 6-0 streak (7-7) with Guzman
notching a pair of kills over the stretch. Fitchburg State
responded, taking a 22-18 margin on kills from Gelinas and
Griffiths before the Falcons held on for the 25-21 third set
victory.
Fourth Set
Fitchburg State grabbed a 7-5 margin on a Sardella kill before
Curry answered with a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 edge. The Falcons
battled back, taking a 23-22 advantage on a Harewood kill, but
the Colonels closed out the match with the final three points
as Guzman netted a service ace, resulting in the 26-24 final.
Inside the Numbers
This morning's contest marked the sixth meeting between the two squads on the volleyball court with Fitchburg State 1-5 all-time when taking on Curry College
Fitchburg State was led by Sardella with a team-leading eight kills, 18 digs and one service ace, while sophomore Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.) added seven kills, one assist, 23 digs and two service aces. Harewood was also solid for the Falcons, finishing with seven kills, one service ace, four digs and four blocking assists.
For Curry , Guzman finished with a match best 23 kills, two assists, two service aces and 12 digs, while Matheson chipped in with 13 kills, three service aces and three digs.
